Check whether your site needs AI labels
Since 2 August 2026 rules on labelling AI-made content apply across the EU. They do not cover every image or every text. Answer a few questions to learn which content on your site needs a label and which does not.
The result is technical or indicative information, not legal advice.
What we check
Images and video
Whether they are covered: who made them, whether they look real and when they were made.
Texts
Whether the topic, a human check and named responsibility remove the need for a label.
AI chat
Who is responsible for saying that the other party is AI.
What this tool does not do
- This is a questionnaire based on the EU AI Act and the European Commission guidelines. It does not look at your site and does not recognise which content comes from AI.
- The Commission guidelines are not binding, and their formal adoption in all languages was still in progress. Disputed cases are decided by authorities and courts.
- It does not cover national rules, for example rules for television and advertising in some countries.
Frequently asked questions
Does every AI image need a label?
No. The duty covers content that looks real and could mislead. Clearly stylised illustrations are not covered.
Since when does this apply?
Since 2 August 2026 across the European Union. Content created earlier needs no retroactive label.
Is a small business covered too?
Yes, if it uses AI professionally. Only purely personal use is excluded.
What should the label look like?
Clear and immediate. For an image, ideally on the image itself; for a text, at the top near the headline. The Commission has published a voluntary icon with the letters AI.
Can software detect AI content for me?
Not reliably. Guessing tools are often wrong, especially in languages other than English. That is why the site owner decides.
